A recent study by Intouch Insights and QSR Magazine has ranked the fastest drive-thru experiences across 13 major U.S. fast-food chains based on wait time, service time, and total time from drive-thru entry to order receipt.

Taco Bell Retains Top Spot

For the fifth consecutive year, Taco Bell holds the title for the fastest drive-thru overall, with customers spending approximately 4 minutes and 17 seconds (257 seconds) on average from arrival to receiving their order. The chain attributes its speed advantage to streamlined operations, use of dual-lane drive-thrus, and growing adoption of digital ordering technology.

Dane Mathews, Taco Bell’s Chief Digital and Technology Officer, noted that beyond speed and accuracy, Taco Bell emphasizes delivering an “emotional experience” and outstanding hospitality to customers, ensuring that the drive-thru is efficient and welcoming.

Other Notable Rankings

·         Tim Hortons ranked third with an average total time of about 4 minutes and 26 seconds (266 seconds).

·         Chick-fil-A, while slower in overall drive-thru speed, leads in customer satisfaction with a 98% approval rating, reflecting strength in food quality and service friendliness despite longer wait times.

·         Dutch Bros, a coffee-focused chain, also achieved a 98% satisfaction rate and topped order accuracy rankings.

Trends in Drive-Thru Service

As drive-thru ordering evolves, speed is no longer the only metric for success. Technology-enhanced fulfillment processes, including voice AI and multi-lane lanes, are used to balance efficiency with complex orders and personalized customer experiences.

The average total drive-thru visit time in this 2025 survey was approximately 5 minutes and 35 seconds, slightly slower than the previous year. However, excluding newly added chains this year, the time was three seconds faster than 2024, indicating operational improvements across established brands.

The Drive-Thru Experience Beyond Speed

Experts highlight that the drive-thru success formula now includes not just quick service but also accuracy and friendly communication. Clear audio and proper order-taking can reduce wait times significantly, while positive staff interactions enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.
